Community Announcements
Welcome to Holy Innocents
We are always happy to have guests with us; we’d like for you to know that we have two services most Sundays during the year, our 9 o’clock service has a more contemporary liturgy and strives to include children as full participants while the 11 o’clock service is more traditional in feel. Children of all ages are always welcome at either service! Godly Play and other youth activities generally happen between the two services during the school year. It is our custom to share a combined Service at 9:30 a.m. on the last Sunday of each month.
Mardi Gras & Ash Wednesday
Our Mardi Gras party starts at 6pm on Tuesday, February 21 in the Parish Hall. We’ll feature Music and DJing from Father Bertie and Ellen French, Rum drinks and other temptations from Stephen Walker and Davey Gerhard, and Cajun and Creole food a’plenty! If you’d like to bring a Cajun or Creole dish, please do! It takes a lot red beans and rice, crawfish, and sausage to feed our parish family! Can’t bring something? Just bring yourself! There is always enough to share.
If you’re interested in helping with set-up, please contact Davey Gerhard at 415 307 0172 or just show up at 5pm. We’ll need some help cleaning up, too!
The following day, as Lent begins with our observance of Ash Wednesday, February 22.
· 4pm: meet Father Bertie, Father Tim, and others at the 24th Street BART station for the imposition of ashes for commuters.
· 6pm: Traditional Ash Wednesday Service and Eucharist at Holy Innocents
· 7PM: Potluck in the Parish Hall. Families are particularly encouraged to attend!
For potluck, please bring salad, soup, and bread. We ask, for this day, that you not bring desserts. Can’t bring something? Just bring yourself! There will be plenty!
Annual Meeting
The annual meeting will take place on February 26, at 11 a.m. following the single service and coffee hour. Hospitality is provided by all. We will talk about the state of our congregation, review our budget, and elect our new Bishop’s Committee members. Please join us for this important meeting.
Please help us welcome our guests!
Each Sunday please take a few minutes to look around and see if there are new faces in the congregation. If you see someone you don’t know, please pick up one of the clipboards with visitor cards on it and invite them to fill in a card so that we can send them a welcome note. If they have already done so, or if you find that the person is simply someone you have not yet met, don’t be embarrassed; use this as an opportunity to introduce yourself.
Altar Flowers
The altar flowers are dedicated to the glory of God, by Erling Eia, in memory of my mother, Yvonne Louise Ravenna, born February 24, 1923, and in gratitude to the congregation of Holy Innocents for their love and prayers.
Wednesday Evening Potluck and Christian Education
Each week the Holy Innocents community gathers on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 PM to share in a potluck of food, wine, and good company!
Everyone is welcome to attend. At 7:00 PM the EfMers (Education for Ministry) regularly meet for their weekly class, while the rest of the company gathers for an hour of interactive instruction and discussion.
Working with San Francisco Youth
New Door Ventures helps at-risk youth in San Francisco get ready for work and life by providing jobs, job-readiness and supportive community.
We are inspired by our faith to empower and equip youth for the future. We provide jobs and training through social enterprises we own and operate, and in other settings. We create community that facilitates personal growth.
If you are interested in working with San Francisco youth, there are two opportunities to serve at New Door Ventures as a tutor or GED instructor. If you are interested please see Joel St. Julien for more information.
Episcopal Charities San Francisco Action Network Meeting – Rescheduled

Finding St. Francis In San Francisco
…a pilgrimage in the city. Dave Olson will lead a tour of sites in San Francisco dedicated to St. Francis in a part-day tour on Saturday, February 18. Meet at Holy Innocents Church at 1:00 PM, travel by bus and foot to 4 city locations and end with Eucharist and dinner at San Damiano Friary, home of the Franciscan Brothers in the Episcopal Church. A car will provide transportation to those who do not want to walk. The gathering at San Damiano is at 6:00 PM, and can accommodate only a limited number. Contact Dave if you are interested: E-mail, dave.olson55@gmail.com.
SOCAP Soul
What if your job, your finances, your investments, and your community were all aligned with what you value? The Diocese of California and SOCAP Conferences have teamed up to put together a one-day event where faith-filled speakers and panels will address just that question. SOCAP: Soul is a one-day event which will be held at the Hub, an exciting new co-working space for social entrepreneurs in downtown San Francisco.
Social entrepreneurs and investors, faith leaders and activists, cultural creatives and thought leaders are all seeking to align what they care about with their jobs, and with the way they spend and invest their money. Be inspired by speakers who have made these decisions. Explore models and find others along the same path. Find a better way forward for this world and yourself.
Join us, Saturday, March 3rd, 2012, at The Hub, 925 Mission Street, San Francisco. Registration Now Open at: http://socialcapitalmarkets.net/socap-soul/
Scholarships are available; please contact Fabienne Blanc or Fr. Bertie for details.
Italy Pilgrimage 2012
A group of members and friends of Holy Innocents is planning a pilgrimage trip to Italy in June, 2012. Cities to be visited include Rome, Florence, Assisi and Sienna, with others possible. Dave Olson, an experienced pilgrimage guide and organizer is heading this up. If you would like information contact Dave personally (normally attending the 9:00am service), by phone – 559.312.5187 – or by e-mail: dave.olson55@gmail.com.
Holy Innocents Cookbook
Calling all submissions for a Holy Innocents Cookbook! To be included in this fundraising effort:
Step 1: Send your recipe to Rhea at rheabette@gmail.com
Step 2: Wait to be contacted by her to set up a little interview so a profile of you can be included with your recipe
Step 3: Have your picture taken with your dish
And voila, you’ve made food history! If you don’t know what to submit but still want to be included, email Rhea anyway, and as the book shapes up she’ll let you know what’s missing. Happy cooking/baking/writing!
Donating Flowers
You are invited to share in the flower ministry of Holy Innocents Church. Please check for available Sundays on the flower chart located downstairs just before you enter the social hall. The suggested gift for Sunday altar flowers is $35. You may dedicate them to God’s glory in honor or in memory of loved ones or in thanksgiving for anniversaries or other events in your life. The flowers will be purchased and arranged by members of the Flower Committee.
Hospitality
If you’d like to participate in our ministry of providing hospitality after the services, please contact: Laura Napolitano for the 9:00 am, laura.napolitano@sbcglobal.net; Cynthia Walker for the 11 am, cynthiawalker_57@hotmail.com; and Fabienne Blanc, fabienneblanc@yahoo.com To sign directly for hospitality, please go to http://holyinsf.org/calendar/rota/. Hospitality can be as elaborate as you wish but it can be also very simple: you can bring one savory and one sweet offering (for instance bread/cheese and cookies, or/and anything else you love to make and wish to share with the community), fruit or vegetable (any kind of fruit, washed, or veggies & dip), and some juice or other non-alcoholic/non-caffeinated beverage. We have coffee, and someone will help you figure out how to make it.
*Frequently on Wednesdays, when the potluck folks come in (there are 30 of us meeting weekly for potluck and adult-ed), we must attend to Sunday’s leftovers dishes in the kitchen. Those responsible for Sunday morning hospitality are asked to wash dishes used on Sunday morning.
