The Julian Pantry was created in 2008. It is a shared ministry of Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church and Holy Innocents with the help of the Community of St. Francis. The Julian Pantry is one of 200+ neighborhood grocery distribution pantries sponsored by the San Francisco Food Bank.
The Pantry provides groceries to over 200 individuals each Saturday morning from 10:00 am to noon at St-John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, (entrance on Julian Street, between 15th & 16th Streets). All are welcome to receive food, although the neighbors from the 94103 and 94110 zip codes have priority.
Volunteers are always needed and welcome, and volunteers are also welcome to receive groceries. Volunteer hours are 7:30 am-noon, and volunteers may serve for all or any part of that time.
The pantry gives away fresh fruits and vegetables and other items provided by the SF Food Bank. The Food Bank however does not provide staples like rice. The Julian Pantry buys staples at a discounted price from the SF Food Bank. To provide this to our clients and to cover miscellaneous operating costs, the Pantry needs to raise approximately $5000 a year. Holy Innocents is responsible for half of the fundraising.
When we harvest Holy Innocents garden, we bring the bounty to the pantry. We have also given seedlings of herb to clients, so that they can plant them on window sills. Every Sunday, we also bring a basket of Pantry food to the altar, along with the other offerings, so it can be blessed.
